Formula
Rolls = ceil((Perimeter × Height) ÷ Sq Ft per Roll)
Wall perimeter multiplied by ceiling height gives the gross wall area in square feet. Dividing by coverage per roll yields the exact rolls needed. The ceiling function rounds up to the next whole roll, since partial rolls are not sold. For pattern-matching wallpaper, buy one additional roll beyond this result.

Measuring Your Room Perimeter
Measure each wall from corner to corner and add all four (or more) lengths together. For a 12×14 foot room, the perimeter is 52 feet (12+14+12+14). Include walls you plan to wallpaper even if they have windows or doors — the wastage at openings roughly offsets the need for pattern-matching overage in a typical room. For an accent wall only, enter just that wall's width.
Wallpaper Roll Coverage
US wallpaper rolls are commonly 27 inches wide and 27 feet long, covering about 56.25 square feet. European rolls are typically narrower and shorter. Check your specific product for exact coverage — it is listed on the product page or package. Pre-trimmed rolls are easier to install; untrimmed rolls require cutting the selvage edge, which reduces usable coverage.
Tips & Insights
Add One Roll for Patterns
Patterned wallpaper requires aligning repeats. Buy one extra roll beyond the calculator result to cover pattern-matching waste, especially for large repeats (12+ inches).
Keep a Spare Roll
Store an extra roll from the same batch number. Wall repairs years later with mismatched wallpaper are obvious. One extra roll costs little and provides lasting peace of mind.
Check the Batch Number
Wallpaper printed in different batches can have subtle color variation. Verify all rolls share the same batch (dye lot) number before purchasing.
Worked Examples
Standard Bedroom (48 ft perimeter, 9 ft ceiling)
8 rolls needed, 432 sq ft total wall area.
Accent Wall (12 ft wide, 9 ft tall)
2 rolls needed, 108 sq ft.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure wall perimeter?
Add the widths of all walls you plan to cover. For a rectangular room, that is 2 × (length + width). For an L-shaped room, add each wall segment individually.
What is the standard wallpaper roll coverage?
US single rolls cover 35-45 sq ft; US double rolls cover 56-72 sq ft. European rolls vary. Always check the specific product's listed coverage.
Should I subtract doors and windows?
Subtracting openings and adding for pattern-matching waste roughly cancel each other out for most rooms. For very large windows or lots of doors, subtracting them is more accurate.
What is a double roll?
A double roll is twice the length of a single roll. It is easier to work with (fewer seams) and usually priced as two single rolls. The coverage per roll you enter should match what you are purchasing.
Can I use this for textured wall coverings?
Yes — as long as you know the coverage in square feet per roll, the calculation is the same regardless of material type.
