Formula
Grade % = (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible) × 100
Dividing points earned by points possible gives a decimal between 0 and 1, representing your score as a fraction of the total. Multiplying by 100 converts that fraction to a percentage. Points missed is a simple subtraction that shows the raw gap between your score and a perfect score.

Letter Grade Equivalents
Most US schools follow this standard scale: 90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, below 60% = F. Some schools use 93+ for A, 90-92 for A−, and so on with plus/minus distinctions. Always check your syllabus or institution's grading policy, as scales vary between courses and schools. This calculator gives you the raw percentage so you can apply whatever letter-grade scale applies.
Weighted vs. Unweighted Grades
When a course has multiple assignment categories (homework, quizzes, tests, final exam) each weighted differently, calculate the percentage for each category separately, then multiply each by its weight and sum the results. For a single assignment without weighting, this calculator gives you everything you need. For a weighted course grade, run this calculator per category and combine manually.
Tips & Insights
Find the Minimum to Pass
Set points_possible to your remaining points in the course and points_earned to 60% of that to see what you need to earn a passing grade.
Track Progress Over Time
Run this calculator after each assignment and note the results. A downward trend early in the semester is a signal to seek help before the final.
Convert to 4.0 Scale
A rough conversion: 93%+ ≈ 4.0, 90-92% ≈ 3.7, 87-89% ≈ 3.3, 83-86% ≈ 3.0, 80-82% ≈ 2.7. Use the GPA calculator for full semester calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What percentage is an A?
In most US schools, 90% or above is an A. Some schools require 93% for an A, treating 90-92% as an A−.
Can I use this for a test with bonus points?
Yes. Enter the bonus points in points_earned even if they exceed points_possible. The resulting percentage above 100% reflects extra credit.
How do I calculate a weighted course average?
Calculate each category's percentage with this tool, then multiply each by its weight (as a decimal) and add them. For example, 85% × 0.40 + 78% × 0.60 = 80.8%.
What is the difference between this and the test-grade calculator?
Grade calculator works with points (raw score vs. total). Test-grade calculator works with number of correct answers out of total questions.
How many points do I need to raise my grade?
Subtract your current points earned from the target percentage times points possible. Example: need 90 out of 100, have 85 — need 5 more points.
