Formula

GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Grade points for each course equal the credit hours multiplied by the letter-grade value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0). Sum all course grade points for the total, sum all credit hours, then divide. The result is a weighted average that accounts for the fact that heavier courses carry more influence.

How to Calculate Your Inputs

For each course, multiply the credit hours by the grade value (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0). Add all those products together to get total grade points. Add all credit hours together to get the denominator. For example: an A in a 3-credit course = 12 points; a B in a 4-credit course = 12 points. Total = 24 points over 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.

GPA Benchmarks and What They Mean

A 4.0 GPA means straight A grades. A 3.0 is a straight-B average. Most graduate programs require a 3.0 minimum for admission, and many competitive programs want 3.5 or higher. Latin honors thresholds vary by institution but often fall around 3.5 for cum laude, 3.7 for magna cum laude, and 3.9 for summa cum laude. Dean's List typically requires a semester GPA of 3.5 or above.

Semester vs. Cumulative GPA

A semester GPA covers only one term's courses, while a cumulative GPA covers your entire academic record. To calculate your cumulative GPA after a new semester, add the new semester's total grade points to your previous cumulative total, and add the new credits to your previous total credits, then divide. This calculator handles both — just enter the appropriate totals.

Tips & Insights

Check for Plus/Minus Grades

Many schools use A+ = 4.0, A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, etc. Confirm your institution's scale before entering grade point values.

Simulate Future GPAs

Add hypothetical future grade points and credits to your current totals to see what GPA you could achieve by the end of the year.

Weight Heavy Courses

A 4-credit course affects your GPA more than a 1-credit elective. Focus grade improvement efforts on high-credit courses for the biggest GPA impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade point value does each letter grade have?

Standard US scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. With plus/minus: A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B− = 2.7, etc.

How do I calculate total grade points for a course?

Multiply the course credit hours by the grade value. A 3-credit B course = 3 × 3.0 = 9 grade points.

Does pass/fail affect GPA?

Most institutions exclude pass/fail courses from GPA calculations. Check your school's policy before including them.

What GPA do I need for graduate school?

Most programs require a minimum 3.0, though competitive programs like law, medicine, and top business schools typically want 3.5 or higher.

Can I use this for a weighted high school GPA?

Yes, if your school gives weighted points (e.g., A in AP = 5.0). Just use whatever point scale applies and the formula still works.
