Formula

Tip per Person = (Bill × Tip%) ÷ People

The total tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. Dividing by the number of people gives tip per person. Total per person adds the bill and total tip before dividing by the number of people, giving each person's equal share of the entire expense including gratuity.

Standard Tipping Guidelines

US tipping norms: restaurants 15-20% for adequate service, 20-25% for excellent; bartenders $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of tab; food delivery 15-20% of order (minimum $3-5); rideshare 10-20%; hotel housekeeping $2-5 per night; hair and beauty services 15-20%. Tipping is optional but culturally expected in service industries where wages are often below minimum wage and supplemented by tips.

Rounding for Easy Cash Splits

When splitting a bill with cash, small rounding differences are inevitable. Round each person's share up to the nearest dollar to avoid change-making. The extra cents go toward a slightly higher effective tip, which service staff appreciate. For card payments, many restaurants allow splitting the check onto separate cards — ask the server before the meal ends to simplify the process.

Tips & Insights

Tip on Pre-Tax Amount

Some etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal rather than the final total. The difference is small but can matter on large bills in high-tax states.

20% Is Easiest to Calculate Mentally

Find 10% of the bill (move the decimal one place left), then double it for 20%. Example: $47.80 bill → $4.78 → $9.56 tip.

Adjust for Group Service

Large parties (6+) often incur an automatic 18% gratuity. Check the bill before adding an additional tip to avoid double-tipping.

Worked Examples

Dinner for Four ($50, 18%)

$2.25 tip/person, $14.75 total/person, $9.00 total tip.

Work Lunch for 10 ($200, 20%)

bill_amount: 200tip_pct: 20people: 10

$4.00 tip/person, $24.00 total/person, $40.00 total tip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard tip percentage in the US?

15-20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service. 20% has become more common as a baseline. 25% is for exceptional service.

Should I tip on the subtotal before tax?

Technically yes — you are tipping on the service, not the government tax. In practice, the difference is small and many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity.

Is an 18% auto-gratuity already a tip?

Yes. If your bill includes an automatic gratuity (common for parties of 6+), that is your tip. You are not obligated to add more, though you can for truly outstanding service.

What if we want to pay different amounts?

This calculator assumes equal splits. For unequal bills, calculate each person's food subtotal separately and apply the same tip percentage to each.

Should I tip on alcohol?

Yes — the same percentage applies to your full bill including drinks. Bartenders and servers work equally hard serving both food and beverage.
