Percentage = (Value ÷ Total) × 100

Three types of percentage problems

Most percentage questions fall into one of three types: (1) What percent of X is Y? — divide Y by X and multiply by 100. (2) What is P percent of X? — multiply X by P/100. (3) X is P percent of what? — divide X by P/100.

This calculator solves type 1. Bookmark the others as mental math shortcuts — they come up constantly in everyday life.

Tips & Insights

Quick mental math trick

To find 15% of a number: find 10% (move decimal left one), then add half of that for 5%, and add them together. 15% of $84 = $8.40 + $4.20 = $12.60.

Percent change is directional

A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does not return you to the starting point — it leaves you at 75% of the original value. Percentages are relative, not absolute.
