Formula

Ovulation day = Cycle length − 14; Fertile window = Ovulation day ± 5 days

The luteal phase (from ovulation to the next period) is consistently about 14 days across most women. Subtracting 14 from cycle length gives the ovulation day within a cycle. Since sperm survive up to 5 days, the fertile window opens 5 days before ovulation and closes about 1 day after.

Understanding your fertile window

The fertile window spans roughly 6 days each cycle — the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. An egg is viable for only 12–24 hours after release, but sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days. This means having intercourse in the days leading up to ovulation, rather than just on the day itself, significantly improves conception odds. Tracking this window is useful whether you are trying to conceive or to understand your cycle pattern.

Cycle length variability

A healthy menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days. If your cycles vary by more than a few days month to month, your ovulation day will shift accordingly. Stress, illness, travel, significant weight changes, and hormonal conditions like PCOS can all cause cycle irregularity and unpredictable ovulation. For the most accurate picture, track your cycle over 3–6 months and use basal body temperature (BBT) charting or LH surge tests alongside calendar-based estimates.

Tips & Insights

Confirm with LH tests

Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the LH surge that precedes ovulation by 24–36 hours, giving you a real-time confirmation that this calculator cannot.

Track BBT for retrospective confirmation

Basal body temperature rises 0.2–0.5°C after ovulation. Charting it daily helps you confirm ovulation occurred and refine your cycle pattern over time.

Account for irregular cycles

If your cycles vary by more than 7 days, use your shortest cycle length for planning — this ensures you do not miss your fertile window in a shorter-than-average month.

Worked Examples

28-day cycle, period started 7 days ago

cycle_length: 28days_since_last_period: 7

Ovulation in 7 days; fertile window starts in 2 days

32-day cycle, period started 10 days ago

cycle_length: 32days_since_last_period: 10

Ovulation in 8 days; fertile window starts in 3 days

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get pregnant outside the fertile window?

It is very unlikely but not impossible due to cycle variability. Sperm survival and unexpected early ovulation can occasionally result in pregnancy outside the predicted window.

What if my cycle is irregular?

Use an average of your last 3–6 cycles as your cycle length input, and combine this calculator with OPK testing for the most reliable results.

How accurate is the 14-day luteal phase assumption?

It is accurate for most women, but luteal phase length can range from 10 to 16 days. Tracking BBT over several months will reveal your personal pattern.

Does the calculator account for time zones or clock changes?

No — it works purely with day counts relative to your last period. All results are in whole days.

Can breastfeeding affect ovulation timing?

Yes. Prolactin from breastfeeding suppresses ovulation, often delaying its return for months postpartum. This calculator is not reliable during lactational amenorrhea.
