Why the 7-to-1 rule is wrong
The 1:7 rule was a rough approximation based on the average lifespan of dogs (10–13 years) relative to humans (70 years). It ignores the fact that dogs mature much faster in early life and much more slowly in middle age. A 1-year-old dog is reproductively mature — more akin to a 10–15 year old human than a 7-year-old. A 2019 study using DNA methylation (epigenetic aging clocks) found that age-related molecular changes in dogs track closely to the AKC-style formula rather than the simple 7× multiplier.
